More than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.  While that’s a staggering figure, the upside is that the survival rate of women whose cancer is detected early is 98%.  Most women realize how critical regular mammograms and breast exams are in detecting breast cancer early on but sadly, not all women who would like to have one can afford one.  Many times, those that are uninsured or underinsured forego or delay getting a mammogram because of the cost involved.  We hope this post equips women who are facing this financial dilemma with the resources available to them in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The Women’s Health Network offers free mammograms to those that qualify based on income and family size.  You can check here to see if you qualify and to find out locations for screening or call them directly at 616-632-7283 or 1-800-301-1733, ext. 7283.  They also offer clinical breast exams, pap smears, pelvic exams and medical referrals if needed.

Spectrum Health has other programs available to help if you are under the age of 40.  You can call the Betty Ford Breast Center to see if you qualify at 616-486-6050.  Even if you are above the income qualifications, there are other grants available.  Calling to find out is the only way to know for sure.  From my own personal experience, they are friendly, helpful people who want to help you get the proper screening.

Saint Mary’s Health Care also offers free mammograms to women under 40 who are high risk or have had a palpable breast mass.  Women are considered high risk if they have a mother or a sister diagnosed with pre-menopausal breast cancer.  You can check their site here to see if you qualify or contact them at 616-752-6756 or 1-800-639-6266.

Mammograms are typically covered by Medicaid, Medicare or most health insurance plans.  You should contact your provider to check your individual coverage, then schedule your appointment!  Mammograms are one of the best resources we have for early detection of breast cancer and programs are available for those that need them.  Don’t let finances put your life in jeopardy!
